Italians Win Melges 24 World Championship

The 20th edition of the popular Melges 24 Worlds was completed and there were a total of 11 races during the event.

At the end of it, the Italians came on top and took home the Melges 24 World Championship. The entire race series was a challenged of the sailors as the crew had to face varying weather conditions from light winds to heavy sea breezes.

The Italian crew with Helmsman Fracassoli, Tactician Fonda, Giovanni Ferrari, Gianluca Perego and Stefano Lagi put up a consistent performance all through the event. They only went to the 10th position once and ended the series with 35 points. They had a whopping margin victory of 23 points over the second classified crew. The Italian Team was at their sailing best at this edition of Melges 24 as they finished day 2 by winning all the races that were held. It was after a gap of five years that the tactician and the helmsman of this crew are tasting success at an event. They had won the 2012 Worlds of Torbole five years ago.

The American Monsoon with Bruce Ayres helmsman, coach Mark Ivey, and Mike Buckley were adjudged as the vice world champions. They also had a very good Melges 24 Worlds outing in 2017 and they were always fighting to gain the podium spot. The Monsoon got two bullets in the 11 race series and this helped the crew to propel to the silver medal position.

The American Mikey also had a very good race during the last bits of the event and they were able to topple the Italian Altea entry to climb to the 3rd position. The Italian Altea had to settle for the 4th position and this was the team that took the Melges 24 European Series. The fifth position was bagged by another Italian Marco Zammarchi on Taki 4.
